Driving for Work: Integrating Fleet Safety into Your OHS Program

Treat driving as a workplace hazard managed through OHS systems.

WorkSafeBC describes “driving for work” as a workplace hazard topic and provides guidance on employer responsibilities and risk controls for driving tasks. Fleet safety should integrate into OHSMS: hazard identification (road type, weather, task pressure), vehicle maintenance, driver competency, and incident investigation.

Build controls: driver selection and training, policies on impairment and distraction, winter driving readiness, pre-trip inspections, and fatigue controls integrated into scheduling. Where workers drive near worksites or operate near moving equipment, high-visibility and traffic control requirements become relevant.

  • Treat driving as a critical risk in your OHS program; implement training, maintenance, and pre-trip routines; investigate crashes/near misses and close corrective actions with evidence.
