Work Zones and Roadside Operations: Traffic Control, Visibility, and Worker Separation
Implement BC roadside work controls using OHSR Part 18 requirements and verified field practices.
OHSR Part 18 includes specific requirements for traffic control persons, including traffic control paddles, signage, and high-visibility apparel meeting CSA Z96 Class 3 criteria while directing traffic. WorkSafeBC also emphasizes roadside safety controls to keep vehicles at safe distances, including at emergency scenes.
Traffic control must be treated as a system: site-specific traffic control plans, trained TCPs, defined safe positions, barriers where feasible, and visibility controls. BCCSA provides a WorkSafeBC-approved TCP course and notes completion yields a TCP record of completion card valid for 3 years and requires passing knowledge and practical evaluation. Use training as baseline and verify field performance through observations and supervisor checks.

Meet Part 18 equipment and high-visibility requirements; train TCPs via approved programs and verify competence in field; use separation and physical controls to reduce struck-by risk.
